DIY Pest Control vs. Professional Pest Control: What’s the Difference?
Walk into Lowe’s, Home Depot, or almost any hardware store and you’ll find an entire aisle of pest control products promising to kill ants, roaches, spiders, and other common household pests.
So, do you really need a pest control company? Or can you handle pest control yourself?
According to Dave Staib of Freedom Pest Services, DIY pest control absolutely has its place. The bigger question is whether the products available to homeowners can provide the same level of treatment as the products, equipment, and expertise available to a licensed pest control professional.
“I think you have the ability to do it on your own. You have access to some of the same active ingredients as me, but at different strengths.” – Dave Staib, Freedom Pest Services
That distinction matters, especially when you are dealing with a pest problem that keeps coming back.
Can You Do Your Own Pest Control?
For minor pest activity, sometimes you can.
If you see an occasional ant or spider, a store bought product may be enough to take care of what you are seeing. There are plenty of legitimate pest control products available to homeowners, and many contain active ingredients that are also found in products used within the professional pest control industry.
But buying a pest control product and creating an effective pest management plan are two different things.
Dave explains it this way:
“When you walk into Lowe’s or Home Depot and you’re buying your Ortho Home Defense, you’re buying a very good active ingredient that is very diluted.”
Professional pest control gives a licensed applicator access to a broader range of products and formulations. More importantly, a professional knows which product is appropriate for the pest, where it should be applied, how it should be applied, and what conditions around the property may be contributing to the problem.
Watch: Is DIY Pest Control Really Enough? Here’s the Truth
In the video above, Dave explains one of the biggest differences between DIY and professional pest control: having access to a pesticide is not the same thing as knowing how to build an effective treatment around it.
The Active Ingredient Is Only Part of the Story
It is easy to compare two pest control products by looking at the active ingredient on the label. But that does not necessarily mean the products are interchangeable.
Different pest control products can contain different concentrations, formulations, combinations of active ingredients, application instructions, and approved uses.
Dave compares the idea to over the counter versus prescription medication. Two medications may be intended to address a similar problem, but the strength and way they are used can be very different.
The same general principle applies to pest control.
Licensed pest control professionals can purchase and apply professional products that homeowners may not encounter on the shelf at a home improvement store. Depending on the treatment, professionals may also have more options when selecting a product for a particular pest, property, or application area.
But access to professional products is still only part of the advantage.
Professional Pest Control Is About Knowing What to Do With the Product
One of the biggest misconceptions about pest control is that success comes down to finding a stronger spray.
It doesn’t.
Effective pest control starts with correctly identifying the pest and understanding why it is there. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also recommends taking a prevention first approach by addressing things that attract or allow pests into a home, including sources of food, water, shelter, and entry points.
Where are the ants entering?
Where are cockroaches hiding?
Are conducive conditions around the house contributing to the activity?
Is moisture involved?
Are pests entering through gaps around plumbing, doors, windows, utility penetrations, or the foundation?
Is the pest you are seeing actually the source of the infestation, or simply the part of the problem that has become visible?
Those are the kinds of questions a trained pest control professional is evaluating before and during treatment.
As Dave puts it:
“It’s the knowledge and the education background that goes along with having this license to apply.”
That experience can make a major difference in the results.
Why DIY Pest Control Sometimes Seems to Work…Until It Doesn’t
One reason homeowners become frustrated with DIY pest control is that the product may kill the pests they can see without addressing the reason those pests are there.
You spray the ants along the kitchen counter. They disappear.
A week later, they are back.
You kill a few roaches in the garage. Then you see another one somewhere else.
You spray around the exterior of the house, but spiders continue appearing inside.
That does not necessarily mean the DIY product is bad. It may mean the treatment is only addressing one piece of a larger pest problem.
Professional pest control is designed to look beyond the individual bug and evaluate the property as a whole.
That can include identifying entry points, harborage areas, moisture conditions, food sources, nesting locations, seasonal pest pressure, and other factors that may be allowing the problem to continue.
There Is Also a Big Difference Between Pest Problems
Not every pest problem should be treated the same way.
An occasional spider in the garage is very different from finding signs of termites.
A few ants around a window are different from an established cockroach infestation.
And pests such as bed bugs, termites, fleas, rodents, and certain stinging insects can require very different treatment strategies.
This is where professional identification becomes especially important. Treating the wrong pest with the wrong product or putting a pesticide in the wrong location can waste time and money while allowing the underlying problem to continue.
At Freedom Pest Services, our team works with everything from common household pests such as ants, cockroaches, spiders, fleas, and ticks to more involved problems including termites, bed bugs, rodents, mosquitoes, and stinging insects.
Experience Matters in Pest Control
Professional pest control is not simply about having access to products that homeowners cannot buy.
It is also about knowing how to use them responsibly and effectively.
A professional should be able to explain what pest you are dealing with, why it may be there, what treatment is appropriate, and what can be done to reduce the likelihood of the problem returning.
So, Is Professional Pest Control Better Than DIY?
For a small, isolated pest issue, a DIY product may be perfectly reasonable.
But when pests keep coming back, you are dealing with a significant infestation, you cannot identify where the problem is coming from, or the pest has the potential to damage your home, professional pest control can provide something that a bottle from the hardware store cannot: a treatment plan built around the actual problem.
That is ultimately the point Dave makes in the video.
The difference between DIY and professional pest control is not simply what is in the bottle.
It is the product, the formulation, the application, the equipment, the training, the pest identification, and the experience behind the treatment.
